Student guide
The search on your course page looks through every word spoken in the videos and takes you to the exact moment a topic comes up, so you don't have to scrub through hour-long recordings.
Work through it in this order:
Type a topic the way you'd say it out loud, then press Enter or click Search:
Every word you type must be spoken in the moment, so one or two words is usually best. Common course terms are matched automatically. For example, searching family member also finds disqualified person.
Results are grouped by video. The line under the search box says how many moments matched in how many videos. Each video shows its date (or course module) and how many moments it has:
The best-matching video is listed first and starts open. Click any video's title bar to open or close its moments, which are listed in the order they happen. If there are more videos than fit, a Show more videos button appears at the bottom.
Questions and comments from class members are labeled Student to protect everyone's privacy; presenters appear by name.
A common word can match dozens of moments. Use the controls under the search box to cut that down. Changing any of them re-runs your search immediately, so there's no need to click Search again.
You'll only see the filters that apply to your library.
Click any moment and the video opens right there, already cued to that part of the recording. Press play and you're in. The full text of the passage appears below the player, and the player controls include fullscreen.
Good to know Playback starts a few seconds before the highlighted words, so you hear the full thought instead of dropping in mid-sentence. If you don't hear your phrase right away, keep listening. It comes up within the first minute.
Use * for "any letters" and ? for "exactly one letter", in the normal search box:
| You type | Finds |
|---|---|
forecl* | foreclose, foreclosed, foreclosure |
*closure | foreclosure, disclosure |
organi?ation | organization, organisation |
A question mark at the very end of your search is ignored, so typing a question like what is a disqualified person? works normally.
Tick Pattern (regex) next to the filters and the search box takes a regular expression. It's never case-sensitive. The handful of symbols worth knowing:
| Symbol | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
a|b | either one | deed of (trust|sale) |
( ) | groups words together | (solo|self.directed) 401 |
. | any single character | self.directed (space or hyphen) |
\b | edge of a word | \bnote\b (not "notebook") |
\d | any digit | \d+% interest |
If a pattern is invalid or takes too long, you'll see a short message instead of results. Simplify it and try again. Untick the box to go back to normal search.
"Where did a student recently ask about foreclosure?"
